Light tones for dim rooms
Whitewashed oaks and sand tones visually open up small bedrooms and units facing an interior courtyard. They hide dust and light pet hair, although coffee stains show more.
AC4 and AC5 laminate
Pisos Pro Medellín is a flooring specialist that installs laminate in living rooms, bedrooms, home offices and workplaces across Medellín, Envigado, Sabaneta and nearby Eastern Antioquia. We have spent more than 15 years in the trade and finished over 900 jobs.
We work with owners who want the warm look of wood on a controlled budget, buyers taking delivery of a new apartment, and companies refreshing their offices without halting operations. Among wood-look floors, laminate is still the lowest cost per m².
Our work starts before the first plank goes down: we explain which usage class each room needs, measure moisture and tell you plainly where laminate is the wrong choice.
Laminate is a layered floor: a high-density fiberboard (HDF) core, a decor sheet printed with the wood grain and a melamine overlay loaded with aluminum oxide for scratch resistance. A balancing paper on the back keeps the plank from cupping.
Good HDF has a density of 800 kg/m³ or higher. Below that, plank edges chip and the click-lock loosens over the years.
Every laminate installation includes:
The European standard EN 13329 is the reference behind laminate spec sheets. It sets two-digit usage classes (21 to 23 for homes, 31 to 34 for commercial use) and the abrasion test that produces the AC rating printed on the box.
Thickness improves the feel underfoot and sound insulation, but not scratch resistance: an 8 mm AC5 outlasts a 12 mm AC3. For Medellín homes we start at AC4, because the grit tracked in from the street wears down an AC3 surface quickly.
| Rating | Approximate usage class | Where we use it | Typical thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| AC3 | 23 or 31 | Residential bedrooms and studies | 7 to 8 mm |
| AC4 | 32 | Whole home, living rooms with pets, small offices | 8 to 10 mm |
| AC5 | 33 | Retail, high-traffic offices, medical practices | 10 to 12 mm |
One figure few people check is thickness swelling after 24 hours in water, which the same standard measures. The lower it is, the better the edges survive a careless wet mop.
When choosing a laminate color we think about the real light in your apartment, not the catalog photo. That is why we bring samples to the site visit.

Warm grays pair well with white millwork and black or wood kitchens. Very cool grays turn bluish in afternoon light, something you only notice on site.
This is the most requested shade in Medellín because it ages gracefully and suits almost any furniture. It also masks fine scratches better than very dark tones.
With embossed-in-register texture, the relief follows the printed grain, bringing laminate closer to real wood. A 4V bevel outlines each plank on all four sides and hides small height differences.
Medellín has high relative humidity much of the year, and laminate reacts to it because its core is wood fiber. Neither EN 13329 nor most manufacturer warranties account for bathrooms or areas that get wet often.
Even where it is suitable, we roll out polyethylene with taped, sealed overlaps and leave an 8 to 10 mm gap at every wall. In kitchens we only use water-resistant laminate with factory-sealed edges.
Over ceramic or porcelain tile, laminate goes in without removing anything, provided the surface varies no more than 3 mm over 2 m. We tap every tile looking for hollow ones, because a loose tile under laminate causes a creak that never goes away.
On a cement subfloor (contrapiso), typical of unfinished apartments handed over as obra gris, the slab has to be cured and dry: fresh mortar keeps releasing water for weeks. There, the polyethylene barrier is mandatory.
The underlayment changes with the surface, and we never use soft foams thicker than 3 mm because they let the click joint flex until it opens. Where the floor meets bathroom or kitchen tile, a transition strip takes up the height difference.
2026 ranges for budgeting in Medellín and its metro area, in Colombian pesos; the final price is set after the site visit.
Labor goes up with lots of cuts (hallways, closets, columns), on stairs and in small areas where travel outweighs the square meters. You can compare other materials in our Medellín flooring price guide.
| Item | Reference range |

| 8 to 12 mm AC4 or AC5 laminate material | COP $45,000 to $95,000 per m² |

| Total installed | COP $65,000 to $120,000 per m² |
| Installed baseboards | COP $12,000 to $30,000 per linear meter |

We measure, inspect the surface and agree with you on the AC rating and color for each room.
We meter the subfloor and any walls facing outside. If readings are high, the laminate waits until the cause is solved.
The boxes stay sealed and lying flat in the room where they will be installed, so the HDF adjusts to the ambient humidity before it is locked together.
We lay the polyethylene running a few centimeters up the wall, with the underlayment on top and seams butted so they never form a ridge.
We start from the straightest wall and offset end joints by at least 30 cm. If the wall is crooked, we scribe the first row to follow its line.
We undercut door casings with a jamb saw so the laminate slides beneath them, with no silicone filler. Then we check that every door swings without rubbing.
We fit transition strips at each doorway, attach baseboards to the wall and pull out the expansion spacers. We dry-clean the floor and hand it over with a signed completion record.
In Medellín it runs COP $16,000 to $26,000 per m² in 2026. The biggest drivers are the number of cuts, the surface condition and whether old baseboards or flooring must be removed.
A 60 to 80 m² apartment is installed in 2 to 4 days.
There is no single winning brand; on the market you will find names like Quick-Step, Pergo and Kronotex, plus house lines from big-box stores. Compare on objective criteria: AC rating and usage class, HDF density, thickness, water resistance and years of manufacturer warranty.
Ask for the spec sheet and check that it cites EN 13329. Laminate without a spec sheet is a gamble.
It depends on the room. Laminate feels closer to real wood and costs less; SPC does not swell with water and works in kitchens and pet areas.
We compare them point by point in our laminate vs SPC vs vinyl guide, and if water is your priority, SPC flooring installation is the better fit.
We do not recommend it, not even the water-resistant kind. Steam and water sitting in the joints eventually swell the edges, damage the manufacturer will not cover.
For bathrooms we suggest porcelain tile, or SPC in the dry zone.

Every laminate installation carries a 1-year workmanship warranty against lifting, open seams or uneven areas caused by the installation.
